Need to install Broadcom 4306 PCI driver in Ubuntu

Just wiped my old XP machine and put Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) on my old Dell laptop - and cannot figure out how to install the necessary wireless driver so I can get it back online! Even tried following one thread to hardwire it - and I think the ethernet port driver is also not on there (not needed going forward either way). I've tried installing what is supposed to be the driver a few different ways. Can anyone help me - starting from scratch - with what to do to get this on-line?

You will have to tell us what the hardware specs are for "this old Dell laptop". You might also want to tell us how you tried installing the drivers and any error messages that might have come up. Most drivers are available in the Ubuntu repos. If you don't know what card/chipset your laptop is using, giving us the output of lspci (in terminal) will help a lot.

When I double click on Hardware Drivers, I see Broadcom B43 wireless driver. When I try to activate it, I get:

Sorry, installation of this driver failed.
Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log

That is a huge log file.

Without the details of why the installation failed we cannot give you much instruction.

You can use the command "sudo tail -n 50 /var/log/jockey.log" to get the last 50 lines of that file, if additional lines are necessary you can change the number from 50.

Did you have internet connection when you tried to activate the driver?

I doubt he did since he notes that both his wireless and wired interfaces aren't working.
