NOTICE: Upcoming LFS101 Course Update
Hello,
We are preparing to roll out a major learning experience refresh of the Introduction to Linux (LFS101) course over the next couple of months. As a result, you will notice changes to the course’s look and feel, along with updated content. We will do our best to minimize disruptions in your learning experience, but wanted to give you a heads up about the upcoming changes. These changes will be incremental, so you will start seeing refreshed pages throughout the course - the first three chapters have been updated and pushed live.
Kind regards,
Flavia

I just started. I have been using Linux on my machine for about 9 months now, and I'm a novice when it comes to networking with an old Pentium Duo as my server. I'm hopeful this class can help because I've tried doing it on my own, but I'm missing something. Thanks.

So should we revise the course from beginning when the update enrolls ????

The course helps you build the foundational skills to work with Linux, which is very stable, no matter the version used. While newer distro versions incorporate new features, the course in its current version teaches you to use Linux and be able to easily transition to working with newer features with ease. You can continue your learning journey as is and once done, you can revisit all or some of the sections that have been updated, as a refresher or to see what is new. Chapters are being rolled out incrementally, one by one, as they are ready. Currently, chapters 1-4 have been updated, and work is in progress on chapter 5.
I hope this helps.

Flavia

Hello!
I started this course about three months ago, but due to various reasons I paused it. Now I am back and hope I'll be able to finish it.
I realized the look is new and at first I wondered whether I had forgotten the beginning or it really was a new one. Now I know the answer
.Greetings!

Hello,
In Chapter 4 Lesson 3 in the second paragraph after the scheme there is the following sentence:
"Historically, this role was filled by the X Window System (commonly called X or X11), which has been part of Linux since the mid-1980s."
In the previous chapters it was said the Linux started in 1991. So in the cited sentence probably should be mid-1990s or not Linux but Unix or something else?0 -
Hi @rumibumi
Thank you for flagging the typo. We had added more clarifications, and the text now reads "Historically, this role was filled by the X Window System (commonly called X or X11). While X originated in the mid-1980s, it has been a core component of Linux desktop environments since the kernel's inception in the early 1990s."

Hello again,
Yesterday I managed to install a live Fedora on a flash drive and started it to try it. I opened the Firefox and tried to open the course, but received the "Error: Internal server error" or something similar and despite the various things I changed in the settings, I was not able to open it. What could have been the cause?0 -
Literally, I just got introduced to the course today. I'd be starting the course today

Hello,
about the new version of the lessons - in the menu in the left (outside the lesson) are shown only the chapter name and one of the lessons, but not all.
I can find them in the other menu - the one incorporated in the lesson, but when I open it, part of the lesson hides in the right part of the screen.
As a compare, the old lessons (from the 6th onward) have all the parts of the chapter shown in the menu on the right (outside the lesson) and I find it useful.

Hi @rumibumi
We are using different tools to design the updated chapters which give us an opportunity to create a more visually appealing and engaging course. One of the downsides is, as you've seen, the two menus.
Regarding the expanded chapter menu hiding part of the lesson - it does not hide it, it resizes the content window to the new space.

It's annoying interrupting the course with questions like "Are you still here?" while I am scrolling and reading the text (the lessons).
It is also annoying when the system says something about bugs and throughs you out of the course and then you to have to search where you were to continue learning.
These things were not happening in the previous version of the course.

I found the main problem - it is the internet connectivity.

[https://forum.linuxfoundation.org/profile/rumibumi] just curious, but why are you using Fedora as your Distro to learn how to use Linux? Why not Ubuntu or Rocky or Alma, for example?

The software on which our professional software is build is Linux, distribution Red Hat. I downloaded both CentOS 10 and Fedora, but first opened Fedora. I was going to learn on CentOS, but at some point decided to use for the learning also Fedora, because (if I had understood right), it is the distribution in the family, which tests the innovative technologies, which could be incorporated later in Red Hat.
Greetings
Rumi
P.S. I realized yesterday, that this here probably is not a "classroom chat", so I'll reduce my comments here. I apologize for being annoying!0 -
Hello everyone, I am joining this course as I am about to begin an introduction to Linux, and I would like to familiarize myself with the subject in advance. I am 70 years old, and this will be my second cybersecurity class. I have created some scripts using Linux/GNU on Ubuntu; however, I feel this has not provided enough practice to build higher confidence.

Linux Foundation Education@fcioanca I like the new look. I was confused a bit at first and then later saw your post in forums here which cleared my little confusion. Thanks
