Install Linux on a newly built computer, no OS?

My son just built a computer for a school project. He purchased all the parts and assembled everything. Now he needs an OS and wants to use Linux. He is a bit lost, never built anything from scratch and has no idea what is involved. If anyone can walk us through what to know/do it would be a huge help!!

Sounds relatively straightforward. He was going to get a Linux disc at Microcenter or somewhere and install from that. A few of his friends are using Linux and gave him some input on which one, but I'm not sure what they decided. Thanks for the help, I will keep my fingers crossed it all works. I know, not very scientific but can't hurt.0
