LFS261 - Not able to install Docker in my Linux VM

I am installing docker on Ubuntu 20, as it is explained in the course installation guide. But I am not able to install, the system returns next message after execute this instruction:
$ sudo apt-get remove docker docker-engine docker.io containerd runc

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Unable to locate package docker-engine****

Do I missed something?
Thanks

  • @Franciscovilo The command apt-get remove is used to remove packages from the system. To install a package on your Ubuntu system, you need to run the correct command, which should be something like apt install or apt-get install
Maybe you are missing something? Could you point to the page number you are referring to?

  • Hello Shivinder
I have make further checks, and realised that is better to follow the instructions from Docker site:
https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/, rather than follow the last 3 pages in the file grstjeeork4m-Lab1.SettinguptheLearningEnvironment.pdf.
    Thanks

@Franciscovilo yeah I got what you are referring to. This screenshot is from the Setting up the Learning Environment PDF

I checked the instructions on the Learning PDF and they seem to match the installation instructions on the Dockers website here - https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/

You received an error here - https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/#uninstall-old-versions which was expected, if you do not have any previous versions of Docker installed on your Ubuntu VM. This confusion should be removed for the new comers.

The above screenshot is from the Docker documentation page.

@fcioanca This can be taken as a positive feedback and this little point of confusion in the Course content can be removed by adding a disclaimer in there that the command might fail. They have a nice disclaimer in the official Docker documentation also, but not in this course content which is confusing learners here. Thanks.

  • Hi @Franciscovilo,

As @Shivinder mentioned, apt-get remove is used to remove packages. In this specific case, it's trying to remove previous Docker versions, before installing the current version.

    Thanks @Shivinder for the suggestion.

    Regards,
    Luis.

  • Dear @luisviveropena

i've follow the pdf step by step on lab 1 and is not working on machine from gcloud.

I've created a second machine and followed
    https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/
    and worked like a charm..

Something is not ok with the steps in the pdf.

personally as a training I would love to have more info of what we are doing with the commands because for expert they make completely sense but for a newbye it doesn't.. example:

    PDF

    ubuntu

they inform you what are you doing and that make sense...

maybe this part is missing " sudo mkdir -m 0755 -p /etc/apt/keyrings " I can't find that on the pdf..

    "

    @andressasso84
You need a space between > and /dev/null:
    $(lsb_release -cs) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null

The pdf doesn't copy and paste correctly. We will see what we can do to represent this better on the pdf. Sorry for your trouble and thank you for pointing it out.
