n00b-EST question ever

OK

i'm learning to command my computers,

i usually use the desktop with the terminal on top

and then i pressed some buttons, and the command line came out of nowhere on me

...AND i don't know how to get back to my nice little desktop

i tried logging in and typing [cd]

help?

    Most likely you did something that exited the GUI and returned you to the Command Line Interface, try typing startx to reopen the GUI. If it remains in CLI after reboot then we will have to know your distro name and version so we can guide you to reinstate it.

    i found my desktop again, very nice to know that people in computer land can help me when i screw up on my portal!

    i hope my computer stays as a GUI for a while :)

    I am glad it helped.

    Did the GUI only go down in the sing boot occurrence or did it stay down after reboot?

    MY guess would have been that you accidentally changed virtual terminals. Next time you are sitting at your computer, hit CTRL-ALT-F1. Then, it CTRL-ALT-F7

    Usually, F1 through F6 are text terminals, and F7 is your X server. If you run a second X server, usually, that's on F8.
