What I need vs. What I have
Hi,
This is my first post to the forums.
I need to convert an old computer to Linux for my 5 y/o grandson and grown daughter to use.
Grandson will want to do nothing but play games, both those installed on the HDD, and online. I prefer he uses Firefox as his browser.
Daughter will need Firefox as well, no games.
The computer I have to use is:
PIII 600
256 mb ram
ATI 3D Rage IIc video
plenty of disk space..
I will have to administer the computer. I'm not new to Linux, but haven't used it in a few years.
The only requirements I have are:
a graphical installer
Gnome desktop (possibly another wm, but something very easy to get the hang of)
shouldn't be too slow
Parental Controls for grandson I have to be able to restrict what he does online.
Could someone please suggest a distro or two?
Thanks very much,
Charles

Hi
I have setup a distro called Qimo for my granddaughter, based on Ubuntu, that might have everything that your looking for. Link:

I know it has a live CD mode so you can check it out before installing it.

See if that has what your looking for.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply.
The big thing I noticed about Qimo is they say it's 'standalone'.
<http://www.qimo4kids.com/page/FAQ.aspx> "How is Qimo different from Edubuntu?"
Gotta have the web! :woohoo:
Been thinking about Xubuntu, but don't have the processor for it (P4 1GHz).0 -
AH, geez, my brain misfired, P3 huh? The last time I loaded onto a P3 was with my old Thinkpad i1413. I do remember getting AntiX and Mepis running on it. Although with new kernels etc, I'm not sure if those would even work now. AntiX wiki says it will work on anything over a P2. It doesn't use a bloated WM like KDE or Gnome, but, you could always add them later.
From reading the forums here:

and the wiki here:

It seems like it still is able to run on P3's. You can always add on the programs that help Qimo be as kid friendly as it is. It uses the Debian repo's directly, so you can always pull any extra apps you need. While it takes a little more work, the Mepis/AntiX forums are very friendly and helpful.0
