portable linux

Can someone please recommend a good portable linux that can be carried around on a flash drive. I also don't want it to install anything on the the computer concerned. It also has to be free (eg. not Mandriva Flash)

I myself have installed sidux 2009-1 Ouranos onto a usb stick 4GB. The live cd has a great usb installer. Just boot up the live cd and go to install as you would any other distro, but pick install to usb. Remember also that if you add persist to the installation you can modify your install, do updates, and, it will retain everything.
  • alright guys thanks
  • Just one more: if you are using Ubuntu on your desktop you can use the "System > Administration > USB Startup Disk Creator" option to generate a USB stick image.

Note that the stick is generated from an ISO that youselect during the process.
  • Which ones can run next windows at the same time? Do they come with the required software or do i need to install VMware Player? I really don't want to have to restart every time I want to switch the OS.
  • Hum... I don't think any of these Linux distribution come with VMWare player installed.

Remember that most of the PEN drive are build from small ISO with the packages available to run in LiveCD mode.

Do you want to install from USB and then run Linux + Windows, or you want to run from USB?

If you want to install Linux and then access Windows you can use VMWare Server (it allows you to create and modify VM's) or some open source virtualisation like Xen or VirtualBox OSS.

slax: it can be run from a cdrom or a usb stick

    http://www.slax.org/

Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system with a modular approach and outstanding design.
Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use
    ...

The modular approach gives you the ability to include any other software in Slax easily.

Get Unetbootin. It will install just about any linux of your choosing as a liveUSB drive on the pendrive of your choice. It comes in both Windows and Linux flavors, so you can create a liveUSB linux pendrive on just about any system. Go here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/
  • I want to be able to run it from Windows. And I also don't want it to install anything.

Puppy Linux is an excellent and well-recommended bootable linux distro. http://www.puppylinux.com The ISO is roughly 71 Megs so you can put half a hard drive's worth on a 16 Gig jump drive.

that is impossible running linux on your usb under windows with out installing anything in windows,

why you dont want to install anything?
why do you want to try linux ?
why do you want it to run under windows?

actually this is possible but you need to install application that will virtually runthe linux OS under windows. and one more thing if you want to learn linux you must be ready to to study learn and appreciate Linux.
