CD distribution information

Hello there,

I once tried a Linux OS back in 2005 that i had placed on a cd, and booted it from my XP machine which I'm still using. I'm a home user.

So I would like to do so again. I had used a CD-RW cd.

What distribution should I use for this task? I've currently got a windows 7 on order, a late 2007 optiplex 760.

I don't plan on using Linux as a primary operating system, since I don't really need to. But Linux offers software knowledge too. I'm curious to try something out with it.
