Running Linux from USB, but saving data to internal HD?

Hi,

I'm pretty new to Linux. At the moment I have a netbook with the latest Lubuntu installed.

I know about running a live distro from USB, and maybe save data on the stick.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to install Lubuntu or another distro on a USB mini flash drive, that I can leave plugged in, but use the internal HD space for accessing and saving data.

My thinking is that, in that way it could have the speed of an SSD drive, but the bigger capacity of a HD for the storage.

Is this possible at all?

Cheers
