Choosing the right drivers/motherboard for Linux

I am planning on building a computer and have been warned that many components are Windows specific and don't support Linux very well. For instance, I was going to buy an Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard, but was recommended to buy from Gigabyte instead. I plan on installing Windows and dual booting to Linux Mint as my primary OS (I need Windows for work stuff). My question is what is the optimal motherboard and drivers for my purpose? Price limit is ~1400.00 for the entire system (I plan to purchase an Intel Core i7-4790K CPU if that helps).

This rig will need the least power. Primarily used for word-processing and viewing multimedia, with some light-weight GIMP usage. The most strenuous work it will do is viewing the occasional 1080p video, and periodic container encryption and decryption (using Truecrypt).

As for budget? I'd like to get away relatively inexpensive, but also with modern hardware.
