Can't install only ONE package in Linux terminal

I have been trying to install only one package in Linux using the --no-install-recommended but always get a 'command is not understood' back in the terminal.

Is there any way to install only ONE package through the terminal?

    What distribution are you using?
What package are you trying to install?
