Desk top configuration

Obviously a 'noobie' I am running linux 17.1 32 bit on a new motherboard with 8 gigs of ram. I can't seem to configure a desktop. I want to place the items in my task bar on the desk top, but can find any way to configure it. I have zero item on my desktop no matter what I try.The version I am running says it is Mint, if that helps.

if you are talking about Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon Edition, then is quite easy. Just press menu, right click on package (app) you want to fix on pannel (task bar), favorite or desktop. Easy as that.

If you are using Linux Mint 17.1 Mate Edition, then, I have no idea.
