📧 Subject: Language Barrier in PSI-Proctored Exams – Request for Inclusive Solutions


Dear Linux Foundation / PSI Team,

I am writing to share my experience as a French-speaking candidate who attempted the KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate) exam as part of the Andela-supported program.

Despite being technically prepared and confident in my ability to succeed, I was unable to take the exam due to issues that had nothing to do with my technical knowledge, but everything to do with the language barrier during the online proctoring process with PSI.


⚠️ My Experience

  • I followed all identity and environment verification steps properly:
    showing my workspace, hands, ears, the four corners of the room, and my passport.

  • However, I was unable to understand certain instructions sent by the proctor through the PSI chat.

  • Since I am not fluent in conversational English, especially under pressure, I could not respond correctly in time.
  • As a result, I was disconnected before the exam even started.

After multiple attempts, I remained blocked at the admission step. Eventually, I was locked out entirely, despite being fully ready and compliant.

Please note that I am writing this message with the help of translation tools, just like I did for any communication that goes beyond my English level.
That said, I am entirely capable of reading, understanding, and working with technical English in the field of cloud-native technologies.


🗣️ A Shared Struggle Among Non-Native English Speakers

Many non-English speakers have reported similar issues with online exams via PSI. Here are just two examples:

🔹 GRE Candidate (South America):

“I just could not understand what the proctor was saying… It took us 30+ minutes to go through her instructions… I felt terrible.”

“My biggest fear is the language barrier since I’m not very good with English… Yes, a language barrier could be an issue.”

These are not isolated incidents. Many candidates are ready to pass their exams in technical English, but cannot manage real-time chat or voice instructions under stress.


🛠️ Suggested Solutions for Fair Access

To improve equity and accessibility for international candidates, I respectfully suggest the following:

  1. Allow PSI-based certifications to be taken at authorized PearsonVue centers, as many other tech cert providers already do.
  2. Improve communication support during the proctoring process:
  • Use simplified or pre-translated instructions,
  • Enable automated translation in the chat,
  • Assign bilingual proctors (especially for French, Spanish, Mandarin, etc.),
  • Provide multilingual FAQs for the admission process.
    1. Consider a retake option in cases where the candidate is disconnected due to a clear language misunderstanding.

🙏 In Conclusion

This message is not a complaint about the difficulty of the exam or its content.
Instead, I wish to highlight that language should not be a barrier to validating technical skills.
