Upstream: SLES vs openSUSE

Options

I read the sentence below under SUSE Facts section but I feel it is the other way around since openSUSE is the community-driven version, so it makes sense that openSUSE is the upstream for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES).

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is upstream for openSUSE.

Comments

  • I can see how you might see that. When a new version of SLES comes out, a new version of OpenSUSE comes out to match the new features in SLES. Sometimes new ideas may be tried in the community-driven version, but for the most part, it is the same as the latest SLES release delayed slightly (weeks sometimes days) in some cases due to a lag in development. The Tumbleweed version of OpenSUSE is picking up reported improvements from what is going to be available in the official release of SLES, so you do see those earlier than SLES, but, still, they are features in SLES upstream from OpenSUSE.
