cannot get microphone to work (audio jack)
On my Fedora laptop, I cannot get sound in, at all, from the audio jack. This is
the Audio Jack on a HP Pavillion on the right-hand side. I am using a generic audio microphone (with a little Lavalier clip). I picked up several of these microphones through eBay back when companies could ship from China directly and pay little in postage
Getting mono microphones to work in Fedora through the audio jack
has been discussed in reddit and in the Fedora discussion groups.
Specifically, I looked at the following and proceeded to try alsamixer to configure the
microphone.

(Note: I posted this to the fedoraforum.org group. Unfortunately, I received no response after a few days. This was question 331577 in the hardware group. I am taking the liberty of posting it here, especially as it probably is not specific to the Fedora distro.)
Another problem is that when the microphone is plugged into the computer, the built-in speaker does not output and playing anything gives silence.
Here is the output of the amixer command after trying.
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 65536
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 64017 [98%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 64017 [98%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Capabilities: cvolume cswitch cswitch-joined
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Capture 0 - 65536
Front Left: Capture 65536 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Capture 65536 [100%] [on]
Here are some screen shots to show what I did with the alsamixer command:
To show my system configuration, here is the output of uname -a
Linux fedora 6.4.4-200.fc38.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Jul 19 16:32:49 UTC 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Here is the output of the System Configuration from About, followed by the Sounds section of that:
