lost files after update..

Hi,

I just recently updated Ubuntu 14.04, but halfway through it got stuck and won't reboot. I am now on another partition, but I can't recover the files from the first. Also, it lost the wifi signal. Is there anyway that at least I can recover the files? For example a command that I can place in a terminal, or by using a usb stick? Any help would be appreciated.

It's a bit long winded, but it's worth looking at. Perhaps you should start from the Partition that works and "Solution Two".

When you say it won't reboot, what happens, what do you see?

Thank you for answering. When I turn on the laptop I get a blank purple screen and wait for the Ubuntu logo... but nothing happens. My son had recently told me that he had the same problem. I will give some of the suggestions a try and let you know what happens. Could I use a usb stick instead of a live cd?

When you get the Purple Screen can you Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to the Terminal Screen , and try to update from there?

One thought is that you might have a video driver installed. Sometimes when you upgrade to a new kernel you have to re-install the video driver.

Done a clean install and all is fine. Downloaded recovery software and found all files!

I hope that you recover all files, because with a recovery software it will not be easy and you can have a corrupted files
