Timothy joined us today to discuss and attempt to determine the cause of the unexpected Kubernetes upgrade behavior reported a couple of weeks ago. The strange behavior was encountered during the Kubernetes cluster upgrade process. A Kubernetes cluster was originally bootstrapped with Docker as its runtime, and then Docker was swapped out (and uninstalled as a result) in favor of the containerd runtime. At the time of kubeadm upgrade it errored out apparently because of missing Docker. This behavior was observed during upgrades from Kubernetes v1.21 to v1.22 and from v1.22.3 to v1.22.4. So far, the workaround is to ensure Docker either remains installed after the runtime swap, or if removed after the swap to ensure it is reinstalled prior to the kubeadm upgrade step.
