Upgrading packages

I have a number of packages & apps that could be upgraded. Is there a command line that is able to update any/all packages at once? Could one tell me where I find the procedure (how-to) to 'upgrade" apps and packages? Going through Linux/Ubuntu forums/how-to's are sometimes far too complicated and I know it's not that difficult! I did upgrade Asunder, but VLC and Gimp are D/led but not yet installed because I'm perplexed by the instructions!

If you use Ubuntu, when connected to the Internet open a Terminal and issue these commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
suso apt-get dist-upgrade
