There seems to be some text that's been lost:

Using relatively low-level tools from the command line, combined with editing various configuration files in the /etc

Could be just the word "directory", or a more detailed description.

The following is rather incomprehensible:

They tend to be quite different and each confined to GUI. They vary little from distribution to distribution, while the only one family of distributions.
