Changing Monitor Resolution

Hi, new here. I just installed Cinnamon 19 (Tara) if I've got that right and my All in One was auto-detected as a laptop and I can't change my screen resolution. At 1600x900 I have to boot up so I can run my pc in rendering mode. I tried adding programming from in the Terminal and I think I tried both xrandr --newmode and xrandr --addmode. The cvt gave me a string of numbers which I should've been able to paste after either command but then was told that 1024 wasn't recognized even though the cvt input was 1024x768. Is there something that I'm missing? This is new to me and I am wondering if Linux Cinnamon 19 allows for what anymore might be low resolution.
