So, after Windows 8 suddenly malfunctioned and wiped out 90% or so of my files, I was able to get some files back using command prompt -- I was unable to use any file recovery applications, however. I installed Ubuntu (accidentally 32 bit, will reinstall with 64 bit).

Photorec doesn't seem to be working, as when I run the command prompt and am prompted for my password, it comes up 'Sorry, try again'. So what are my options for file recovery? Recuva with WINE?

download Ultimate Boot CD. It's free and has lots of tools you can use for recovery. Also look in to the "dd" command in Linux. Good Luck
