error with efibootmgr

Hello, I need help dual booting linux mint 17 xfce on mid 2010 macbook pro.

I followed the tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com /tutorial

/view/1643, but used dvd for mint install, xfce in stead of cinnimum, and I

didn't make a home partition (just linux mint and swap in osx disk

utilitys). For the install I clicked "something else" and changed the 2

partitions only. When I clicked install I got a warning that I should have

at least a 1mb partition for something or mint may fail at a later time. I

didn't know what to do and clicked ignore to install. After mint installed

I installed efibootmgr in command prompt and when I ran it, I got an error

"fatal: could't open sysfs or procfs directories for accessing EFI

variables. Try 'modprobe efivars' as root"

I don't understand the error. Any ideas how to get efibootmgr working?

Thanks.
