Is starting Linux on a brand new PC build different than upgrading Windows?

I'm pretty new to linux, but I've heard its a much better option than windows. I would like to use linux on my new gaming rig. Should I just download Linux from my other computer onto a thumb drive to boot from that? Or do I need a previous OS to work from?

You can start Linux on a computer with no OS. Just make sure you Boot from the device first, before the Hard Drive.
