Linux Kernel

I've found that virtualizing systems can be helpful. I was wondering about how to install the kernel in virtualbox or vmware player. I'm thinking that i would download the kernel then boot the machine from live cd (iso) so i can partition the drive then load the kernel to a virtual floppy and unpack it then install it. I would like to know the terminal commands to unpack/install.

If anyone could help i would appreciate that.

If you are looking to add a custom kernel to a linux based distro installed in a VM then you would treat it just like a physical installation where you download the source, then compile and install it locally. If you are looking to build a custom installation without a distro then you will need a live CD image to boot into first, once the live image is booted you can partition, compile and install a new kernel as the base.
