Well, that all depends on which version of Linux you want. (There are thousands of versions of Linux.) I will give you a link for the most popular version:

    Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

How to Install Ubuntu 12.04: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Installing-Ubuntu-12-04-LTS-266201.shtml

To install Ubuntu on your external drive, AND NOT YOUR IN-BUILT DRIVE, you need to select the "Something Else" Bubble on the "Allocate Drive Space" menu. Then, set up your partition, and select your external drive. After that, it's all gravy from there.

Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, just let me know.

it works great but i installed it on the wrong hard drive.

That sounds like the bootloader is pointing to the wrong drive to find the Ubuntu boot partition, I was thinking that might happen. Can you attempt a re-installation and tell the boot option to boot on the first drive?
