No volume icon no sound in Puppy Linux

So Im a noob who with no previous experience managed to get Puppy LInux 5.2 up and running after a full install.

There is no volume icon. Why? I have no sound in the speakers or in the headphones and no master volume. ALSA the sound card reader says it detects four sound cards. Does this program after selecting a sound card give a volume icon control? It hasnt done so. So i downloaded retrovol the program and got the tgz unzipped and the pet file is downloaded too. Neither work. Where do I type $/.configure, $make, $make install to get programs to work on this new OS?

Any ideas on how to get the sound up and running as well as how to get new downloaded programs to work would be great. Puppy Linux 5.2 comes with a program that unzips the tgz files so I can put them in folders in areas of my hard drive. But I dont know how to run the programs.

So two questions: 1) How to get volume control(sound) and how to install/run new programs. (Wine 1.3.9) apparently works after I unzipped the tgz file(I was able to access windows programs somewhat on a CD)

The volume icon is not present because some dependency has not been met, this could be a library file or an icon set, you will have to check you error logs in /var/log to determine what is wrong.

In puppy the package installation files end with .pet, the can be installed from the command line on a single package basis or downloaded similar to ubuntu's functions by using the puppy package manager. You can find more information at http://www.puppylinux.com/development/package-management.htm

Wine works for some programs, but you will need to check the appdb at www.winehq.org to find the compatibility list, can you tell us what app you are trying to run?
  • Sbagen and Audacity are the only programs I want.

The reason for this computer are generating binaural beats in .wav and mp3 format. That's it. I dont want anything else. Its all about the sound file.

Based upon the missing icon, I think that some part of the installation disk was corrupt from the burn. Did you do a disk verification on the installation disk when it was complete?

As for the audio issues, lets address that on you thread about the audio card to keep the responses simple and separated.
  • Luoocyeee . . I wonder if this is the right place for this comment? It seems modern chips have all the acutraments of a compleat computer of yesteryear with L1,2,3 cache equal and sometime larger than ram used to be. So why not use a cross bar switch perhaps out of an fpga and use all that air cooling space for a water cooled layered mount that interfaces several chips stacked on top or next to each other like slices of bread. This would extend cross compatability between hardware legacy, current and future reducing ellectronic waste. The fpga would allow for a variety of pin configurations. Their could be a sub layer that fits the specific mount and then transitions to a universal field of pins or pin array. - Whats that buzz it sounds like there's a conflab going on some were, What! son . .? what are all the guys doing in the sonar lab oops mums the word . . robot lab . . is that a television set? They thought it could be valuable to correlate an applause metter to television content in hopes of identifying and possibly recreating the commedic stylings and witty banter used to enthral audiences by television hosts. Well then carry on . . You know I never really noticed yet some times when eating a drum stick that sometimes I find it rather unapatizing when they have one or more veins. I wonder if thats just me noticing or if it has to do with hormons or the way the bird is dressed? I can't say. Check this standard E (bar two frets up 5 and 4 string one fret up third string) use at (7th fret,v^v^v^v)(5th,^^^^v^)(3rd,v^v^v^v)(2nd,^^^^v^)(0th,v^v^v^v)(standard E open 4th string,^^^^v^)/<the "/"means play on top of each other sync.>using the 1st string only (8th fret,v^v^v^v^)(8th,^)(11,^)(8,^)(rest,^)(8,v)(9,v)(8,v)(11,v)(8,v)(9,v)(8,v)(11,v)(8,v)(9,v)(8,v)(13,v)(8,v)(10,v)(9,v)(11,)(13,v). Interesting its like latin jazz or mareachi its almost a counter part to bues the way improvisation is so readily applied like a time step in tap dancing. Did you copyright it? Oh sure but it can take months to get your certificate. I hope its not to cleche' the harmonies are a fussion of flaminco, jazz and meriachi reminicient of weekend resort movies you mite see on a spanish channel that are filled with high jinks. The harmonies are compelling but don't demand center stage I'm thinking it would make the perfect back ground for a broadcast thets looking for a tropical resort feeling with a breezy latin flavor. How's the jet program doing are they getting enough lift. Ya I think so however the laminar flow separation is always a concern of course, like in the old days it's something we are watching very carefully.
