Cannot Play Single Player/Multiplayer in OpenArena

I've recently installed OpenArena on my System76 Pangolin laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. However, I cannot seem to get multiplayer up and running (it replaces the game screen with an OpenArena CLI) and single player will not load bots to compete against.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should do to fix this problem?

I read the manual and after applying the v0.8.5 patch I could finally access multiplayer online. Single player still eludes me, though. I have no idea what I need(ed) to do to fix the problem, and I have uninstalled openarena until I can actually use it online and off.
