dsl boot problems (kernel panic)

i just installed dsl on a flash drive and im trying to use it on my dell insp. 1200 when i try to boot the dsl screen comes up i hit enter and it trys to boot and then a error message comes up and says :

Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:02

im pretty new to linux so i have no idea how to fix this any help would be great

o and i don't know if this helps but i have no os installed on this computer xp completly crashed and i don't have the xp disc anymore and i don't really think i would install it if i did thanks

    Have you tried to add the waitusb "cheat code"?

    Sometimes, it can take a while for a usb device to be ready for the kernel to read the filesystem, causing your Kernel panic.

    Instead of just pressing enter to boot, type
    dsl waitusb
    
    and THEN press enter

    If that doesn't work, we'll need to look at some of the boot files.
