14.04 config for i think CGI?

Still very new with Linux.

While trying to learn python i have come across the need to execute a python script and return a HTML response.

My python resource uses Abyss server, but my preference is to use ubuntu for now, trying to steer clear of windows.

My server is a VM using virtual box, i can get the index page using the IP, but when i add /pythonscript.py it opens a new tab and tries to download it.

My research tells me it is something to do with a  cgi-bin folder, this is not under /var/www/html which i believe is for security purposes.

I enabled the cgi module and restarted apache2.

Now i am lost, and google is confusing, not sure exactly what to ask anymore.

Any help much appreciated, otherwise back to windows.
