How to migrate Thunderbird MBOX files to Google Workspace?
Migrating Thunderbird MBOX files to a Google Workspace account can be a little confusing at first because Google Workspace Gmail does not support direct MBOX imports. I faced the same issue when I wanted to move my old Mozilla Thunderbird mailbox data into my business Gmail account. Initially, I tried uploading the MBOX files directly, but Gmail could not recognize them.
After some trial and error, I found that the manual method works through IMAP synchronization. First, I connected my Google Workspace Gmail account to Thunderbird using IMAP settings. Then, I used the ImportExportTools NG add-on to import the Thunderbird MBOX files into Thunderbird. Once the folders appeared, I dragged the emails into the synced Gmail folders. Thunderbird automatically uploaded all emails to the Google Workspace server.
Although the method works, it becomes slow for large mailbox files. To make the migration easier, I later used the BLR MBOX Converter Tool, which transferred all Thunderbird MBOX emails while keeping attachments, folder hierarchy, and email formatting completely secure.

You can definitely do this manually, but honestly it becomes pretty time-consuming once the MBOX files are large or you have multiple Thunderbird folders to migrate. Most users usually connect their Google Workspace account in Thunderbird through IMAP, import the MBOX files using ImportExportTools NG, and then drag folders into Gmail for syncing. It works, but there are a lot of chances for sync issues, duplicate emails, crashes, or incomplete uploads with big mailboxes.
I faced a similar situation while moving old Thunderbird archives to Google Workspace. The manual method was fine for a few folders, but handling attachments and maintaining folder hierarchy became messy. That’s why I switched to BitRecover Thunderbird Converter Wizard. It directly migrates Thunderbird MBOX data to Google Workspace/Gmail without needing complicated manual syncing.
What I liked about it:
- Bulk migration of Thunderbird MBOX files
- Maintains folder structure, attachments, metadata, and formatting
- Direct export to Google Workspace/Gmail
- Supports selective email migration with filters
- No dependency on Thunderbird add-ons during migration
- Much faster for large mailbox archives
A lot of forum users also mention that Thunderbird imports can become unreliable with larger datasets or nested folders.
So if you only have a few small MBOX files, the manual Thunderbird + IMAP method is okay. But for professional or bulk migration, BitRecover saves a huge amount of time and avoids sync headaches.

To migrate Thunderbird MBOX files to Google Workspace without losing emails or folder structure you can try the Softaken Mail Importer Tool. I used it to move multiple Thunderbird MBOX files directly into my Google Workspace account and the process was smooth. The software supports secure login and transfers emails with attachments, formatting and metadata intact. You need to add the MBOX files, choose Gmail or Google Workspace as the destination and start the import process. It also supports batch migration which saves a lot of time for large mailboxes. The interface is simple so even non-technical users can complete the migration easily without any complications or data loss.
