Hi,
I tried to download vmware fusion from broadcom for macos. Apparently , if you registered with a non corporate email, you cannot build your profile and therefore not use free download for vmware fusion (analogue of vmware workstation player). I suspect the same is valid for vmware workstaion player. I think the information presented in ch.4 needs to be revalidated as big part of this chapter is dedicated to installing linux on vmware workstation player and claims its download free.

I followed the course in the past week after registering to Broadcom (the now parent/owning company of VMware products) with some wondering through their "community portal" I manage to find the setup instructions and I was able to download and install the VMware workstation (including the VMware player) in my Ubuntu machine free of charge.
