Navigating IRC

Hello Everyone , I am applying for the Linux Bug Fixing Mentorship this summer ,
there was the mention of IRC and joining it through OFTC .
This is my first time hearing about it . Can anyone help me by explaning what it is and how do i join it and what happens there ?

    Hello, from what I understood, IRC is a open source messaging app. I tried the below steps and it worked for me.

    Please download and install the HexChat client. After installation. Create a nickname and set a password. Add a new network called OFTC and use the server address: irc.oftc.net/6667. Connect to the network and join the channel #kernel-mentees.

    I assume this is correct. If in case there is something else to this, someone please assist.

    I'd call it an "old school" and more rudimentary type chat room. Technically it's a protocol that got going in the late 80's. Think discord, but more driven by commands, chat history isn't possible in many cases, etc.
