what books or documentation about linux programming do you recommend to have on hand?

  Linux Device Drivers, Third Edition is a good one. In general I would recommedn going straight to the sources and Documentation in the kernel git - https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/ which is kept current as much as possible by kernel developers.
